Quality of Life" Artists, community members, Arts Consortium and
Arts Visalia will be there. Nadi Spencer of Three Rivers will also
be there to discuss the First Saturday monthly event. As well as

how the arts benefit business and our local economy.

The Tulare City Historical Society and the Tulare Historical Museum
are pleased to announce an exciting exhibit by Artist Jana Botkin.
Jana is well known in the Central Valley for her wonderful pencil
drawings. So some of her followers might be surprised that her
upcoming exhibit at the Tulare Historical Museum will be comprised of
oil paintings.

“Images of Home: Paintings by Jana Botkin,” will open on Thursday
May 5, with an artist’s reception from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the museum’s
Heritage Room. The public is invited, and refreshments will be served.

Botkin was raised near Ivanhoe. She has a degree in art from College
of the Sequoias and has worked in art and art-related businesses
since college, primarily under the name Cabinart. Botkin works from
her home studio in Three Rivers. Botkin’s exhibit will be on display
May 5 to July 16.

The museum is located at 444 W. Tulare Ave., Tulare. Hours of
operation are 10:00 a.m.â€" 4:00 p.m. Thursday - Saturday. In addition
to our regular hours, we will be open the third Sunday of the month
for free from 12:30-4:00 p.m. during the months of September â€" May to
correlate with our Sunday @ 2 program Admission is $5.00 for

Artist Becomes Eclectic

An Artist’s Reception will be held for Peggy Schaffer on Thursday
March 31st from 6-8 p.m. at Provost and Pritchard Consulting in
Downtown Visalia. The public is encouraged to attend this ‘meet and
greet the artist’ event. Her show -- comprised of a collective mix of
her eclectic styles and subject matter -- will be on display through
April.


During her tenure, Shaffer has gone from crayolas to acrylics and
beyond. Since childhood, art has always been her favorite subject.
She first dabbled in oil painting as a young mother in the 1960s.
Today, as a retired high school English teacher, she says she’s again
become addicted to art. Creating with fervor, on a near daily basis,
the artist has produced a new body of work in watercolors, colored
pencil, pen and ink and pastels.


A friend, LaDawn Christenson, helped spur her renaissance;
introducing her to watercolor techniques and pointing her in the
direction of the Porterville Art Association. Of her following
experiences, Shaffer says “I have learned so much by listening to and
applying the good advice of other accomplished artists. I observed
their work done in numerous mediums and in widely varying styles,
trying hard to adopt every skill they exhibited.”


And that she has, as this show evidences. While many may see art as a
solely individual pastime, in its’ ultimate sense, the work is not
complete until it is experienced by others. It is beyond doubt, that
this form of communication -- which unites us; crossing all social
lines -- is truly a noble endeavor. As the artist Peggy Shaffer says
-- “I believe that by using our creativity in a constructive way, we
can uplift and motivate others, while deepening our own sense of self
and well being.”

‘Art in the Alley’ Returns with Call to Artists

Each Spring, the Arts Council of Tulare County (ACTC) presents “Art in the Alley,” a seasonal open-air art faire, coinciding with Downtown Visalia’s Farmers Market. This year’s season will expand to six months. “Art in the Alley” joins the market on the third Thursdays during the months of April through September from 5-8 p.m., while the market runs weekly. Once again, artist’s stands will wind from Garden Street Plaza down the adjoining alley to the market on Church Street.

Presently, ACTC, is seeking artists, entertainers, musicians, film makers and craft makers -- from young masters to old masters -- to fill the area with appealing work from silly to sublime. Booth spaces in a variety of sizes are available, depending upon location. Last year, attendance thronged as an ‘arena of art’ was created.

Displaying recent art alongside spring-fresh produce, this downtown event’s an occasion to herald the harvest season’s arrival. It’s a place to entertain and be entertained. The activity generated also helps boost the local economy.

Once again, children and adults alike can participate in free hands-on activities. Last year, Imagine -U offered projects from tempera painting to clay sculpting, chalk art and even tie painting for Father’s Day. Similarly, others offered diverse pursuits -- face-painting, family games, live music and performances. In support, space for these type of family activities are offered free or at a reduced rate.

This ACTC event is sponsored and supported by Visalia Farmers Market, Downtown Visalia Alliance, Imagine-U Children’s Museum, First Capitol Group Inc., The Arts Consortium, California Arts Council, National Endowment for the Arts, and partially funded by Visalia’s Community Art Grants Program.

The sponsors understand that a deep-rooted part of our bounty is gathered in the field of the arts. This is why only original work is accepted – no items which are mass machine produced by another source.
