>> PATRICIA SELIN, AKA HENRIETTA,
>> INTERNATIONALLY REKNOWNED FRESNO ARTIST,
>> TO SHOW AT THE BRANDON-MITCHELL ART GALLERY
>>
>> The Brandon-Mitchell Art Gallery , 117 So. Locust St., Downtown
>> Visalia , is very proud to present the works of Patricia Selin,
>> oil-painting artist currently residing in Fresno . Patricia is
>> originally from Salt Lake City where she received a BFA in
>> Painting from the University of Utah . She served as Assistant
>> Director of the Utah Museum of Fine Arts and has taught and
>> exhibited widely. Her work is included in collections throughout
>> the world.
>>
>> Someone described Patricia’s gestural oil paintings as ‘like
>> windows to other worlds.’ Just as the changing images suggested
>> by clouds, the paintings do not reveal all their secrets at once
>> but tease and test the imagination. Collectors of her paintings
>> are attracted at first by the artist’s rhapsodic colors, then by
>> the rhythmic composition, the sensual surfaces…and the imagery.
>> She combines painterly brushwork, then thin washes of oil glazes
>> and gesso textural effects to create exciting three-dimensional
>> drama. When this writer asked if she would be able to give a talk/
>> demo of these intaglio glazes and gesso textural effects Patricia
>> laughed and said “No, I don’t do demos of any kind because I am
>> a nervous wreck, and the work is really messy. I throw
>> paint!!!!! The technique is simple; the trick is the oil glazes
>> build up in layers rather than a heavy application.â€
>>
>> Patricia had been painting portraits and large format abstract
>> works for many years when a decorator friend asked for a light
>> whimsical floral painting that would be fun and decorative. She
>> has developed these floral pieces with a totally different
>> concept, fun to paint and lighter than her other works. She signs
>> these pieces “Henriettaâ€, a name she had used in other creative
>> endeavors. She had a studio gallery in San Mateo called
>> “Henrietta Floral Etudes.†She developed the gesso intaglio
>> and oil glazing technique over the years and hopes a Henrietta
>> will “make you smile and enjoy the beautiful color, texture and
>> magic of flowers.â€
>>
>> Patricia Selin’s personal evolution has led from representational
>> painting of traditional subjects to an exploding new expression of
>> emotion, mystery and multidimensional plane, sometimes soft and
>> meditative, sometimes vibrating with passionate power. The images
>> evoked by her latest large format oils seem to plunge the viewer
>> into the center of illuminated prisms whose patterns continuously
>> change with the movement of light.
>>
>> When Patricia begins work on a new canvas, she thinks of a color,
>> not an image, and begins with the color of the mood she is in at
>> that moment. “As I mass the color on the canvas, the form I see
>> emerging suggests the direction the painting should go.†The
>> process is part inspiration, part calculation, part instinct and
>> discovery, and part technique and knowledge. She paints from all
>> directions, turning the canvas on her easel to assure the
>> composition is balanced no matter how it is hung. She signs on
>> the back so the collector can hang the painting in any of four ways.
>>
>> Please check out her website at PatriciaSelin.com.

Artist Becomes Eclectic
By Chad R. Homan
An Artist’s Reception will be held for Peggy Schaffer on Thursday
March 31st from 6-8 p.m. at Provost and Pritchard Consulting in
Downtown Visalia. The public is encouraged to attend this ‘meet and
greet the artist’ event. Her show -- comprised of a collective mix of
her eclectic styles and subject matter -- will be on display through
April.
During her tenure, Shaffer has gone from crayolas to acrylics and
beyond. Since childhood, art has always been her favorite subject.
She first dabbled in oil painting as a young mother in the 1960s.
Today, as a retired high school English teacher, she says she’s again
become addicted to art. Creating with fervor, on a near daily basis,
the artist has produced a new body of work in watercolors, colored
pencil, pen and ink and pastels.
A friend, LaDawn Christenson, helped spur her renaissance;
introducing her to watercolor techniques and pointing her in the
direction of the Porterville Art Association. Of her following
experiences, Shaffer says “I have learned so much by listening to and
applying the good advice of other accomplished artists. I observed
their work done in numerous mediums and in widely varying styles,
trying hard to adopt every skill they exhibited.â€
And that she has, as this show evidences. While many may see art as a
solely individual pastime, in its’ ultimate sense, the work is not
complete until it is experienced by others. It is beyond doubt, that
this form of communication -- which unites us; crossing all social
lines -- is truly a noble endeavor. As the artist Peggy Shaffer says
-- “I believe that by using our creativity in a constructive way, we
can uplift and motivate others, while deepening our own sense of self
and well being.â€
